Claiming the earned income tax credit is fairly simple. If you meet the criteria to receive a credit then you must file a tax return in order to claim it.
You can claim the EITC credit by using Forms 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ.
- If you use Form 1040 then you will need to follow the instructions on line 64 a.
- If you use Form 1040A then you will need to follow the instructions on line 38 a.
- If you use Form 1040EZ then you will need to follow the instructions on line 8 a.
If you received any advance EITC payments throughout the year then you will have to use Form 1040 or Form 1040A. You must report the payments you received and it needs to match what your W-2 reported as received payments.
If you are using an online tax preparation service to file your return then it should be very easy. They will automatically ask the necessary questions to ensure that you receive the credit if you are eligible. If you are not eligible it will give you an explanation and if you are eligible then you will be given a credit amount.
